To get started, you need a small electric iron with a low-heat setting. The Encaustic Arts iron is easy to manage and has been specially designed for painting with wax and has a quality thermostat to maintain stable temperature. Alternatively, any iron can be used as long as it has a steel, uncoated base and no holes.
The iron is the main tool used to create the backgrounds and effect. Examples of these effects can be found under “Iron Techniques“.
It can also be used as a mini hotplate by sliding the body ito the handle so that the whole iron surface is exposed.
